Literacy Talk

Are you looking to improve literacy at your school?

During small group instruction, coach students as they engage in reading and writing with reading prompts. Check out this guide of prompts for when a student is having difficulty reading a word.

The goal of prompting students is to encourage them to become independent readers.
For less advanced readers try to use these prompts:

  • “Look for parts you know.”
  • “Sound it out.”
  • “Check it! Does it make sense?”

For more advanced readers try to use these prompts:

  • “You know this word part.”
  • “Say this part.”
  • “Now read the whole word.”

One school even made their own video so kids can remember reading prompts.
