Character Choices: Compassion / December 2015

Character Choices in December

What better character trait to learn in December than compassion?

In lieu of the holiday season, students across all academies incorporated compassion into their academic learning, and everyday happenings.

Dove Academy

Dove Academy spread compassion throughout the community! Project Night-Night used donations collected by families and staff to donate care packages to homeless children. The children received a blanket, stuffed animal, and a book – all things to help bring the feeling of “home” wherever these children may be. Dove Academy students also sponsored a food drive for a local food bank. But, that wasn’t it! Students also spent time to make cards for an 8 year-old who recently lost her family in an arson home fire, and experienced life threatening burns herself. And again, the Dove family didn’t stop there! Before the holidays concluded, students, staff, and families came together to help a family who had Christmas gifts stolen from their home. Now that’s compassion!

West Michigan Academy of Environmental Science

character-choicesWest Michigan Academy of Environmental Science (WMAES) also showed compassion during the month of December. Every year, WMAES students and families come together to participate in the WMAES Toys for Eagles drive. 2015 was WMAES’ fourth year promoting their holiday giving program. Similar to Toys for Tots, Toys for Eagles collects toys, clothing and gifts for WMAES family members who are experiencing hardships during the holiday; making gift giving difficult. This year was another huge success! In all, 18 families were able to pick up gift boxes for their children – that’s over 50 children who are receiving gifts donated by students at WMAES. Students, staff and families of WMAES certainly spread compassion through their giving this year!

We are so thankful at Choice to have such compassionate academies. Whether compassion was shown through gifts of toys, care packages, or the gift of time and love, compassion was surely displayed throughout the entire month of December. How did YOU show compassion?
