The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) recognized Muskegon Montessori Academy for Environmental Change (MMAEC) as a Reward School for the 2015-2016 school year.
MDE created their Top-To-Bottom listing by comparing schools on their improvements, achievement gaps between their highest performing thirty percent of students, and their lowest performing thirty percent of students. Along with this, MMAEC has also earned the title of Beating The Odds (BTO). A BTO school is recognized as having overcome traditional barriers with student achievement, as well as outperforming other schools with similar risk factors and demographics.
MMAEC is in their fourth year and serves kindergarten through eighth-grade tuition–free. They also serve their community with a tuition-based preschool program. The mission of Muskegon Montessori Academy for Environmental Change (MMAEC) is to prepare students to be academically and environmentally excellent for sustained success in a global economy. The Academy sharpens critical thinking skills in its students through learning that remains relevant, active, environmentally focused, and globally mindful. Located at 2950 McCracken Street in Norton Shores, Michigan, their campus sits on a 2.26-acre lot just off the Lake Michigan shoreline.

Our staff are dedicated and passionate educators who are always looking for new ways to engage their students with setting goals and taking pride in the effort that it takes to achieve those goals,” Ali DuBois, Head of School, explained. “Teachers address the needs of each child through individualized work plans to accelerate their learning and give personal attention to all children. Their growth is evident through this acknowledgment. While we celebrate this recognition, we know that this is only one of the many steps we need to take to ensure all students are successful.”
“Being named a Rewards School was well earned by MMAEC’s administrators, staff, and students. It wasn’t their primary goal, but a milestone in their effort to provide the best possible educational environment to the students and families of Norton Shores,” MMAEC’s Area Superintendent, Stan Rathbun, said.
