A message to our Choice Schools’ staff

A message to our choice schools' staff - with an image of Sara Wildey

Dear Choice Schools Family,

The other day I heard an educator say they receive 200 emails a day – 200 emails expecting their response.

Those numerous messages consist of what we’ve all been hearing and living these past few months, “We are living in unprecedented times.” “The world of education as we know it is changing!” “We don’t know when things will return to normal.”

And they are right. Knowing that the idea of what we once knew as “normal” will never be the same is unknown and scary. We want you to know that we see you, and understand your frustration, stress and uneasiness about what comes next. But, as educators, our job calls us to rise up, and now more than ever, your students need you! For many of these children, school is a safe place – a second home. You are part of a team that is familiar to them.

The reason I wanted to interrupt your day was to ask something from you. My request is to acknowledge the feelings you’re having about returning to school. Know that these feelings are normal. This year will be challenging, but we have faith in you! We trust you to do what you know how to do – and that is to be there for your students through education and support. We know at the end of the day, everyone is doing their best.

Remember why you chose this profession. Think back to your favorite days of school, both as a child and educator, and reminisce, remember the good. Talk about your students with your family and friends. Focus on what is most important to you.

As a Choice family, it is essential to work together through good times and stressful times. This upcoming school year is no different. In the words of the late U.S. Rep. John Lewis, “Nothing can stop the power of committed and determined people to make a difference in our society.”

With much appreciation,

Sarah Wildey
