5 Tips to Help Educators Relax and Unwind Over Winter Break

This year, more than ever, it is important to unwind and relax over winter break. We know that the job of an educator is an ongoing responsibility and it may be difficult to remove yourself from your computer and not plan lessons for the next semester, but we hope you treat your break as a time for self-care, rejuvenation and reflection. To encourage you to decompress and re-energize, we asked five of our school leaders for tips on how to spend winter break and this is what they said:

Whether you have been virtual or in-person the past few months, it is now time to unplug from your devices and enjoy some well-deserved and much needed time off. As tempting as it may be to scroll through Facebook, take a stroll through the neighborhood instead! I challenge you to put your phone down and pick up a magazine or read a book. Try to give yourself (and your eyes) a break from technology and plan time for #1 (YOU).

Go outside and soak up the wonders of nature. No matter where you live, breathing fresh air can reduce stress and refresh your mind. During the much-needed winter break, I encourage you to step outside for at least 30 minutes a day. While you’re out, notice how you are feeling; revel in the joys of nature. And remember to breathe, because 2020 was a rollercoaster of a year for all of us and reflecting on how far we have come as educators is a moment to celebrate!

– Susie Schlehuber, Head of School at Lake Superior Academy

This holiday season may look different, but if you are able, I encourage you to spend quality time with those near and dear to your heart. Being present and intentional with those who mean the most allows us to naturally find joy in this season. If unable to be together physically, take a moment to send a message to a loved one to spread joy to others.

– Stacy Byrd, Head of School at Four Corners Montessori Academy

Although this year has taken different turns and changed plans for many, we’ve all found the silver linings that help us appreciate the good we have in our lives. Take a moment of reflection to identify the good, whether it be people, health or happiness you have found. Outlook is key to finding the good, so take this time to find the things in your life that have made you smile.

Your dedication to your students is unparalleled and now it is time to shift your focus to yourself. I encourage you to spend time over the winter break practicing self-care. Spend time on your hobbies, read a new book, practice a new method of stress relief, or send Dr. Harrison a gift! 🙂 This break is your time to do something that makes you happy.
