Natural Playground at BCMA

Battle Creek Montessori Academy started construction on its natural playground.

The idea came from kindergarten teacher Jess Rasmussen who believed that a natural playground fit perfectly with the Montessori philosophy. Families, friends and community members donated wood, flowers, trees, tires, rocks and various other materials to start the construction. Families and staff members met on Sunday to start the construction. They planted seven trees, prepared recycled wood for construction, built a tick-tack-toe board and set up various gross motor activities. Building a natural playground not only reaffirms the importance of family involvement but also promotes creativity, stewardship, and recycling. Construction will continue throughout the year.
